Cycling Shorts

The image of the professional biker wearing tight shorts and a matching brightly colored jersey covered with corporate logos has become almost commonplace. While it might seem a bit extreme for the occasional cyclist, these shorts serve a very real purpose.

Cycling shorts have special reinforcements for the contact area between the body and the saddle, given the fact it is very important to make sure that you remain comfortable during any length of ride. shorts remain comfortable by moving with you to prevent chafing. The protective pad provides additional comfort by providing some shock absorbtion and wicking moisture from the body.

The best shorts must have an ergonomic cut that conforms to your body. More pads generally result in a more conforming fit, but experts claim that more comfort is achieved with a better sewing quality. Most shorts have pockets which are usually located at the back where less sweating occurs.

The material used to manufacture shorts insure that the leg muscles are supported while also allowing free air circulation. The saddle contact area most often includes a gel pad that absorbs or dissipates shock by forming a barrier between the hard surface and the rider's body. The material in this area often contains and antimicrobial substance. Most road riders prefer shorts made of Lycra that is capable of removing a lot of moisture.

Different materials are use in the construction of shorts made for mountain biking because of the need for them to be durable and still remain comfortable. There is usually a combination of cotton and spandex used which definitely increases the comfort level.

For off-road or casual riding there are also loose fit shorts that have durable outer short which looks like a regular street short, but under the outer short there is a normal Lycra or mesh short with a pad. shorts need to have some extra protections given the rough terrain conditions where the biker wears them: shock absorbing pads and a special liner panel prevent the discomfort caused by bumps and allow full motion ability.
